The Wisdom of the Body

You're body has been speaking to you your entire life, but you were never taught to listen

               When we think about the senses, most of us can name the five we learned in school: sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Those senses help us understand what's happening around us. But another sense is working quietly in the background every second of every day. It's called interoception, and it plays an important role in how we experience stress, uncertainty, relationships, and decision-making.

Interoception is your brain's ability to sense what's happening inside your body.

 

It's constantly monitoring your heartbeat, breathing, muscle tension, hunger, fatigue, temperature, and hundreds of other internal signals. Your body collects this information and sends it to your brain, creating an ongoing picture of your internal state.

 

But interoception isn't just about sensing what's happening inside you. It's also about what your brain does with that information. Your brain combines physical sensations with past experiences, memories, and what's happening around you to answer a deceptively simple question: What does this mean? The meaning it assigns to those sensations helps create your emotional experience.

Imagine your phone buzzes and you see the name of someone connected to your construction project. If you're the contractor or designer, you may wonder whether a client is upset, a subcontractor has a problem, or something has gone wrong on site. If you're the homeowner, you may wonder whether there's another delay, an unexpected cost, or a decision that needs to be made. Before you've even opened the message, your heart rate may increase or your stomach may tighten. The message could contain good news or bad news, but your brain has already begun predicting what might happen next.

 

We tend to think emotions simply happen to us, but they're created through an ongoing conversation between the body and the brain.

 

 

Your body provides information. Your brain provides context. Together, they create an emotional experience that can shape how you think, communicate, and respond.

This is why emotions don't always seem logical. You can know a client isn't upset and still feel your stomach tighten before returning their call. You can trust your contractor and still feel anxious when something unexpected happens to your home. You can know a delay isn't anyone's fault and still feel frustrated by it. You can know a difficult conversation is necessary and still find yourself avoiding it. Logic may understand the situation, while your brain and body are processing much more than the facts alone.

The same process can work in positive ways. You may gradually realize you trust someone, feel yourself settle when you walk into a familiar place, or begin looking forward to working with someone before you've consciously thought about why. Your brain and body have been gathering information and learning from those experiences all along.

Understanding interoception changes how we think about ourselves, our situations and the people around us.

Instead of assuming an emotional response is irrational or that someone simply needs to "be more logical," we can recognize it as the brain's attempt to make sense of information coming from both the body and the environment. That doesn't mean every interpretation is accurate, but it does mean there's something behind it worth understanding.

This matters because construction operates in an environment of constant uncertainty. Schedules shift. Problems emerge behind walls. Materials are delayed. Budgets evolve. Professionals carry responsibility for projects, teams, schedules, and outcomes, while homeowners may be living with disruption, financial exposure, unfamiliar decisions, and reduced control over their own homes. Everyone involved is interpreting new information while their bodies are also responding to pressure, uncertainty, and risk.

Understanding interoception doesn't eliminate those challenges. It helps explain why two people can experience the same event very differently, and why knowing the facts isn't always enough to change how we feel or behave.
